DISPATCH 09-06-11 PORT AU PRINCE HAITI

09-07-11

2050 hrs.  I have been in Haiti for a few days but it feels much longer. There’s a lot to see and a lot to know here.

Even though it’s been almost two years since the earthquake, parts of this city still remain in ruin. The back of my hotel faces a mountain range and it’s easy to see the tents where the houses used to be. Some places got it worse than others of course but even now, it’s still pretty bad around here.

As it is with all the places I have been postwar or post disaster, it’s the follow up to the immediate aid that concerns me. It’s the issue of sustainability that concerns me.

I was in some tent cities today. I was asking the residents about the NGO’s, what they thought of them, how they are living now, etc. Some of the things I heard and was shown were very hard to take. Some people have been living in these tent cities since the earthquake. I was shown a tent where prostitutes do work their trade. It’s about one dollar and twenty-five cents and some of the girls are very young. Like really young.

This is hard to write about. I will be telling these stories on the next tour for sure.

I was at an orphanage yesterday. About three hours north of the city. Great place run by a Haitian-American nurse and her father. I am going to make a contribution and will be going further to help her out. The kids are fantastic and they are doing great work. I will post information about the orphanage as soon as I get some and you can do with it what you will.

I have seen a lot in the last few days. I have a few more days here. I will be hitting the streets armed with soccer balls tomorrow and going to a few tent cities. There’s always kids around and they are always looking for something to do. I have seen them kicking some very bad balls around so I will try do a little fixing on that front. I bought two today and gave them to one place and it seemed to be a hit so tomorrow I am going to go big on that and get those distributed.

The heat here is incredible and from noon to two, it’s pounding.

We have some copies of my new book for pre-sale left. I will be signing them up in about two weeks or so. Here’s the information on all that: http://static.musictoday.com/store/bands/1821/images/occupants.html

Remember, this coming Saturday, we start our radio show at our new time of 8 pm. I will be putting that one together in the next two nights. I will start in on it later tonight.

I have been making notes on a long thing I want to write about the ten year anniversary of September 11th, 2001. I have been reading George Bush’s autobiography Decision Points and it’s causing a lot of things to come up. It’s a low calorie read. I am now determined to read all three crime novels; Bush’s, Cheney’s and Rumsfeld’s. It’s torture but I am determined.

I will have more to tell you about Haiti later in the week.

Thanks for reading this.
