RADIO BROADCAST #212   04–21–13

04-17-13

Fanatics! Our show has moved, or that is to say, has been moved by forces much, much greater than The Big Three and now we find ourselves on Sunday nights from 8 to 10 pm. The wisdom or lack thereof shall make itself known to us as time goes by.

As you might feel along with me, it’s really not a Sunday night kind of thing we do and I don’t know how it’s going to fit at this new time.

For me, Sunday is a grim proposition. Monday looms and one must prepare for the week to come.

What is the soundtrack for a Sunday night? I have been thinking about it a lot. On Sundays, I am ususally somewhere, doing the second draft of the LA Weekly article I have to send in by Tuesday. If I am listening to something, it’s usually something somewhat restrained or at least contemplative.

For our first Sunday show, I decided that we should not lie down and die but actually get up and break everything in sight. It is, after all, Iggy Pop’s birthday and that is definitely cause for celebration.

I decided to make a tightly scripted and music heavy show without much talking in between tracks. I will be on location on this date and so I put the show together and sent in all the parts to Engineer X to prepare for use at show time. Below is what I sent to the man:

KCRW BROADCAST #212
04–21–13

HR: Good evening Fanatics. Strategic consideration and concern have landed the Big Three, that is to say, myself, My Brother in Sonic Jihad, Engineer X, otherwise known as the Big Daddy and the young Will Bentley here in this new time slot.

Right now, we would like to play for you a field recording I made many years ago, while walking my mother, I’m sorry, while walking with my mother. She has a thyroid condition which unfortunately causes her to sound like an elderly male herpetologist. Let’s listen . . . .

01. Mating call of the Spring Peeper 0:24
02. Tom Araya – Revenge / Rise Above 0:53
03. Public Enemy - Welcome To The Terrordome / Fear Of A Black Planet 5:26
04. Iggy & The Stooges - Raw Power / Raw Power   4:16
05. Black Sabbath - Into the Void / Master of Reality   6:13
17:10

Back sell.

HR: And now, I would like to read a bit of wit from my new book of poems, called Low Hanging Fruit. Not to be confused with the New York Times bestseller, My Life As A Low Hanging Fruit by senator Lindsay Graham.

The bell ringer had no idea why people called him Quasimodo
. . . but he had a hunch.
Uh, thank you.

HARD DRIVE

HR: Fanatics, Welcome back to the show. It was Martin Heidegger who once said: “Every man is born as many men and dies as a single one.”

And I always say: All men born could someday be bakers, but no man can ever be cake.

07. Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak / Live and Dangerous 4:33
08. Led Zeppelin - Rock And Roll / The Song Remains The Same   3:56
09. Deep Purple - Highway Star / Dazed And Confused Soundtrack   6:08
17:00

Back sell.

HR: Many years ago, my father asked me, “Son, what do you want to be when you grow up?” “Why father, a horse’s ass, of course!” I replied. And all these years later, here we are, me on the radio with you and my father, hanging upside down, waiting for the sun to set, so he can fly out of his cave and hunt the night skies for insects.

HARD DRIVE

HR: Today is Iggy Pop’s birthday. The Heavyweight Champion of Rock and Roll is 66 years alive. Make sure to check out his new album with the Stooges called Ready To Die, to be released on the 30th day of this month. And now, the man himself . . .

Hour 2

HR: Fanatics, in our continuing effort to deliver you the very best, we again make sport of the recently released Jimi Hendrix album People, Hell and Angels with yet another song they could have put on but chose not to. This is a tune that on the several bootlegs it shows up on, is called Bolero. This version is from one called 500,000 Halos, which I cannot remember where or when I got it. That’s what sailing the seas of consequence and cough syrup will get you . . .

01. Jimi Hendrix - Bolero / 500,000 Halos   6:15
02. Iggy Pop – Funtime / The Idiot 2:57
03. Marnie Stern - The Chronicles of Marnia / The Chronicles of Marnia 3:10
04. Electric Wizard - We Hate You / Dopethrone 5:08
17:29

Back sell.

HR: There’s something on your face. Slightly above the left side of your upper lip. Could be a piece of coffee cake or pita bread, perhaps? No, a little higher, no, it’s still there. Almost, ok you got it. May, may I have that?

HARD DRIVE

HR: And now, here is another song from a band we listened to a couple of weeks ago when Uncle Ian came to visit us, back when we were fab, called Slant 6.

05. Slant 6 - What Kind Of Monster Are You? / 20 Years Of Dischord   2:02
06. Soccer Team - Letter To Saint Thomas Aquinas / 3 Song 7”  2:35
07. The Aquarium - White House / The Aquarium   2:14
08. Iggy Pop - The Passenger / Lust For Life   4:44
09. Georgie James - Cake Parade / Need Your Needs   3:24
10. Air Miami - Airplane Rider / Wakefield Vol. 02 1:55
16:51

Back sell.

HR: A man once told me, “I have to pick up my baby from her office job downtown because her car is in the shop.” I told him that I thought the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 had put an end to child labor.

HARD DRIVE

HR: Apparently, there are at least two mixes of the third Velvet Underground album. The one featured on the VU box set is called The Closet Mix, which is the version of their song What Goes On we are going to listen to right now. These days, you can hardly find a closet with enough room to hang up your coat with all the members of Congress hanging around in there.

11. The Velvet Underground - What Goes On / The Velvet Underground   4:38
12. The Jesus & Mary Chain - Ghost Of A Smile / The Power Of Negative Thinking   2:56
13. The Ruts – Jah War / single   3:37
14. The Warmers - Walking Solves It / The Warmers   2:46
15. The Stooges - Not Right / The Stooges   2:51
16:44

Back sell.

HR: Fanatic, I am sure that is quite enough from the likes of us. On behalf of myself, your voice of choice, Henry Rollins, My Brother in Sonic Jihad, Engineer X, otherwise known as the big daddy and the Young Will Bentley, we wish you . . . good night, and good luck.

So, there is the show. It’s pretty relentless and I don’t know what you will think about hearing it on a Sunday. The show might take a few weeks to find itself. I feel like I am walking blindfolded in my own house but someone has moved what little furnture I have into different locations. That is to say, I know where I am yet everything is a little off.

Hell, I don’t know if you will even have any interest in listenign to a show on a Sunday night. Thank you if you do, I understand if you can’t or won’t.

Thanks for reading this and STAY FANATIC!!!
