Fanatic! It's radio show time once again. Myself and Larry from In The Red Records are working on some really cool Record Store Day releases and they're almost at completion. These will be super cool and I'm very excited about them. Something to look forward to for RSD. 

I hope you've been getting in some good listening since last week. I've been busy at night going here and there so my listening time was greatly compromised but I hope to make up for it over the weekend, which is only slightly slammed. 

Martin Rev, he of the legendary band Suicide will be playing in Los Angeles on January 30. I got my ticket. I've seen him play solo once and it was great. 

There are some great records lined up for this year. Wasted Shirt's Fungus II album is blazin', the new Cold Beat album Mother is great as well. The new Alien Nose Job album Suddenly Everything Is Twice As Loud is really good and a new album by the band Handle called In Threes is also worth checking out. The reissue of Hex Enduction Hour by The Fall on Cherry Red records I think is going to be my favorite reissue of the year. It’s a sixty minute album, so when put across two sides, the sound is compromised. The Cherry Red reissue is a 2LP set. The music comes alive in a way it never did before. If you like this album, you’ve never heard it sound like this. 

My favorite album of the year is going to be Miami Memory by Alex Cameron. I can’t wait to hear what he does next.

Fanatic! I hope you had a great week and are ready for the weekend and almost two hours of primo tunes gathered with your best interests in mind. No, really! 

Our second hour is really cool. A long time ago, there was a band called the Cramps. They made an album called Songs The Lord Taught Us. The version that hit the stores wasn’t the original. It was producer Alex Chilton’s second set of mixes, which were in my opinion, not nearly as great as the first ones. How would I ever be able to form such an opinion if the first mixes were never released? Because the first version of the album got as far as the test pressing stage. As you can imagine, it’s an expensive record. Also, unsurprisingly, it was released as a bootleg which sounds pretty good but not as great as a rip from the test pressing which I made for this show, which will take up a good part of our second hour. Prepare to be very happy. This album needs to come out for real one day.

 Fanatic! I just got back from the first of two nights of the Make-Up playing at Zebulon here in Los Angeles. Tonight’s show was great, can’t wait for tomorrow night. The night after, I’m seeing Alex Cameron at the Troubadour. The next night, I’ve got band practice. Fanatic, have you heard the Malaria! 2LP reissue? I played it last night. The second LP is their first album, Emotion. I don't think it's ever sounded better. That's a great one. Last night I tried to remember when I first heard them and I think I got it down to 1983 when I started checking out bands from Berlin as well as my meager savings would allow.

Fanatic! Happy Friday! Have we got a show for you. New, old and in between. One of my favorite tracks of the show is David Bowie and his band doing Sister Midnight. There’s some live versions from tour but my favorite version is from the Vancouver rehearsals, which we’re playing tonight. I think we have a cool and eclectic line-up of tunes. 

I don’t know what you’re into but if you’re a Dinosaur Jr. fan, the Cherry Red LP reissues sound amazing. I’m checking out Green Mind right now. It’s never sounded better. Earlier today, I was listening to the reissue of Room To Live by The Fall, another Cherry Red 2LP reissue and I have to conclude that they’ve done it again. 

On Monday night Berlin time, my new book, Stay Fanatic!!! Vol. 1 will be go on sale from henryrollins.com. It was six years of writing, gathering and editing to get it to the printer. We’re very excited about it. I’ll be spending the weekend signing them. That’s about 14 hours but worth it. I like the idea that the books of mine that people get have been in my hands. We did a short video that explains what the book is about that will hit the site evening on Monday, Berlin time. 

I’m up in a few hours for a long day of writing my name over and over. Can’t wait!

Fanatic! Thank you for  reading these brief notes. I wanted to give you an example of how different Joy Division was in the studio than in the live setting. Two distinct forces and both of them are great. As you can see, we start both hours with JD, same track, one studio and the other live. Otherwise we have what I think is pitch perfect November listening. I was just in Washington DC working on a project and the weather was so great. I got to wear a jacket and everything. Now I'm back in the desert of LA.

Fanatic! Our last show for October. I think we started a show with Sister Midnight a few weeks ago but it fits for this month, so we will listen to it again. It's a perfect way to start the show. 

This show is very much the mix tape feel. This month, I've been trying to balance my listening with new records, like the Love/Evol set by Boris and the new HTRK Over The Rainbow album, with all my October favorites like the UK Subs, the Damned and The Fall. I've been trying to listen to music in two shifts. Day time at the office, which is tricky to not drive other people here too crazy, and then at night when there's no one around but me.

Fanatic! We have yet another great two hours of music prepared for you. I looked up the weather reports for Berlin this week and it looks like it’s cooling down there. Plenty warm in the frying pan of Los Angeles. 

 

October is a month where I try to listen to as much music as possible. That’s my goal all months of the year but I really pour it on in October. I’ve been doing double shifts. It’s been going great. Later in the month, I’ll put in a list of all the albums I listened to.
